Phthalates are a group of chemical compounds used in the production of plastics and plant pesticides, and are currently under investigation for possible cancer causing effects.

Toulene is obtained from petroleum and often makes up 50% of nail polish. It can cause liver damage, is narcotic in high concentrations, and is irritating to the skin and respiratory tract.
 

It is possible to buy nail polishes, hardeners and even polish remover which are free from these potentially harmful ingredients.
