What To Avoid

Parabens (can be called Methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl paraben)
Used in many beauty products as a preservative. Mimics oestrogen which can disrupt hormonal levels.

Phthalates
Widley used in deodorants, hair care and skincare, and have been linked with asthma and allergies as well as affecting fertility.

Formaldehyde
Used as a preservative as it mixes easily with water. Found in lots of shampoos and shower gels. This chemical has been classified as a carcinogen and is banned in other countries, including Sweden.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
Detergent found in shampoos and body washes. May cause eye damage and skin rashes.

Petrolatum
Also known as mineral oil or paraffinum. Commonly found in baby oils and lotions. Strips natural oils from skin causing chapping and dryness.

Talc
Usually found in baby powders. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that using talc in the genital area ‘may increase the risk of a particular type of ovarian cancer’. Can also cause respirtory disorders.

Propylene glycol
A Chemical commonly used in baby wipes and lotions – and also used as an industrial anti-freeze and in brake and hydraulic fluid. Can cause rashes and dry skin.

DEA and MEA
Foaming agents used in body washes, soaps and shampoos which might trigger carcinogens in the body.

Fragrance
Fragrance or parfum listed on a label can mean up to 4,000 separate ingredients. Many of these may be potentially toxic or carcinogenic.

There are now readily available products that are free from parabens petrochemicals, artifical perfumes and mineral oils, however it always pays to read the small print on the labels…
