Natural crystal deodorants work by forming a topical layer of mineral salts on the skin, creating an environment in which it is impossible for bacteria to thrive. The mineral salts eliminate the bacteria and therefore the body odour. These mineral salts are usually made of potassium or ammonium alum. This shouldn't be confused with the aluminium contained in conventional antiperspirants – their molecular structure is quite different and is too large to be absorbed by the body.
