The sun's out and it's time to think about sunscreen. Not only does it protect you from skin damage and sunburn, but it’s also a valuable weapon in the fight against skin cancer. But how do you choose which is best for you and your family? There is increasing research that some of the ingredients that are often found in sunscreens may not be what you want to be using.

Saving money doesn't have to mean not being eco friendly – here's our top tips on how to be green and thrifty at the same time..

1) Look out for products which last – while eco-friendly products may seem more expensive per pack they often work out cheaper per use. For example, a natural solid crystal deodorant stick may seem more expensive than a chemical one, but it should last you up to a year. Similarly, the Pierre d'Argent eco cleaner has a multitude of uses and a tub lasts for ages!

Many people now choose to use natural deodorants rather than antiperspirants for health reasons.

Deodorants usually contain ingredients to deal with the bacteria responsible for body odour (thus tackling the cause of the odour), whilst allowing the body to sweat naturally (a valuable way to get rid of toxins).

Antiperspirants do what their name implies - they stop you from sweating, generally using aluminium of one form or another as the active ingredient.

There is increasing evidence that aluminium salts, which account for 25 percent of the volume of some antiperspirants, can get through the skin and into the body, where they can mimic oestrogen.

When looking at natural, eco-friendly products, a big area to consider is cosmetics and skincare. While there are laws about the safety of our food, when it comes to cosmetic companies the standards are not so stringent. Since 2006 there has been a new European cosmetic directive which gives greater protection to consumers but most eco campaign groups would say this still gives very little protection. We should be looking at the fact that we get multiple exposure to potentially harmful chemicals in many cosmetic, body and skincare products which are often used by all the family. Everyday items such as deodorant, shampoo and bubblebath - even baby wipes, can contain 'nasties'!

Next time you are painting your nails, think about  what is in the products you are using. The toxic nature of ‘beauty’ products which are readily available and deemed acceptable always amazes me.
